Cody Johnson brought his signature charm to the annual CMA Country Christmas special with a breathtaking two-song performance on Tuesday night.
Taking the stage in front of a beautifully decorated set, the Texas native delivered heartfelt renditions of “White Christmas” and “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” adding his own special touch to these beloved holiday classics.
Ahead of the show, Johnson shared how performing these holiday tunes allowed him to showcase a more intimate side of his artistry, offering a contrast to the high-energy atmosphere of his massive arena and stadium concerts.
“I think that I get to show a little bit more of a Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin side of myself that you don’t normally see when you come to one of my live shows,” he explained. “In my live shows, I try to be very electric, jumping off of risers and keeping the crowd right here in the palm of my hand. But with these songs, the reason why I chose White Christmas and I’ll be home for Christmas, is to kind of show off a little bit different side of my voice that you wouldn’t normally hear.”
Johnson recorded versions of both “White Christmas” and “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” for his holiday album, A Cody Johnson Christmas, which released in 2021. This project also includes a recording a “Pretty Paper,” plus “Santa Claus Is Back In Town,” and “If We Make It Through December.”
Hosted by Amy Grant and Trisha Yearwood, CMA Country Christmas aired on ABC and also featured performances from Ashley McBryde, Jon Pardi, Cece Winans, and more.
The upcoming holiday season will look a bit different for Cody Johnson and his family. The country superstar revealed that their house is currently undergoing renovations and that they will likely be traveling for the holiday season.
“We moved into a house on our ranch and we had several wonderful Christmases in this big new house, and right now we’re remodeling everything and so now we’re living in a trailer house,” he shared. “So this year while waiting for our home to be finished, I’m going to take ’em on vacation and we’re going to go someplace in the snow, which may wind up being a new tradition in Texas. We don’t have white Christmases, and if you do, you’re generally outside repairing and wrapping pipes.”
Christmas in the Johnson household is ever-changing as his daughters, Clara and Cori, get older.
“I think once they get a little older than they are now, they’re nine and seven. Both of my girls, our holiday traditions change and they’ve changed every year because of their ages, what their interests are, what Santa Claus is bringing, what me and mom are buying for ’em,” he explained.
No matter how Cody Johnson and his family plan to spend Christmas, one thing is for sure: they will all be together. Johnson is set to wrap up his 2024 tour schedule with back-to-back shows on December 12 and 13 and Las Vegas. After that, his 2025 tour will pick up on January 17.
